Transforming Recovery Through Nature
Each year, Hillingdon Hospitals Charity supports a major appeal to fund a project that will make a lasting difference to patients and staff. Following the success of our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) appeal, which funded the refurbishment of the unit, our latest appeal is The Safe Harbour Project.
The Safe Harbour Project will create a dedicated mental health and sensory space within Bumblebee Ward for children and young people experiencing mental health crises, as well as children with neurodiverse needs. The project takes its name from The Lighthouse, our adult mental health unit, reflecting the aim of creating a safe, calming and supportive environment for children when they need it most.
Currently, children experiencing mental health difficulties are cared for on the general children's ward. While they receive excellent clinical care, the environment is not specifically designed to meet their sensory and emotional needs.
With your support, we will create:
- A dedicated de-escalation room for adolescents in mental health crisis.
- A sensory room designed to help children feel calm, safe and regulated.
- A more welcoming, homely environment with specialist lighting and noise reduction.
- Access to sensory equipment, toys and activities that reduce anxiety and support wellbeing.
From fidget toys and puzzles to interactive sensory equipment, these resources can provide comfort, positive distraction and emotional regulation during what can be an extremely challenging time for children and their families.
