Transforming Recovery Through Nature
In 2024, The Hillingdon Hospitals Charity completed one of its most ambitious patient wellbeing projects: the Jubilee Rehabilitation Garden.
For many patients recovering on rehabilitation wards, opportunities to spend time outdoors can be limited. Yet access to nature has been shown to support both physical recovery and emotional wellbeing.
The Charity set out to change this by creating a dedicated sensory rehabilitation garden that would provide patients and their families with a welcoming outdoor space designed specifically to support rehabilitation and recovery.
The project brought together world-renowned expertise, with the garden designed by Max Harriman of Tom Stuart-Smith Ltd, under the direction of celebrated landscape designer and eight-time Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medal winner Tom Stuart-Smith.
The result is a beautiful and therapeutic environment where patients can enjoy fresh air, participate in rehabilitation activities and spend time with loved ones away from the clinical ward environment.
The garden has transformed an underused area into a vibrant space that supports physical movement, social interaction and mental wellbeing. It stands as a lasting example of how charitable funding can create environments that help patients recover with dignity and confidence.
